Software for Progress Foundation Is Now a 501(c)(3) Public Charity

We are excited to share an important milestone in our journey. Software for Progress Foundation has officially been recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi).

This designation reflects the heart of our mission: supporting developers who create Open Source software that helps people. It also strengthens our ability to grow, collaborate, and serve communities that rely on accessible and equitable technology.

What This Means

Being recognized as a public charity means:

  • Donations to Software for Progress Foundation are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law
  • We are eligible for grant opportunities, employer matching programs, and philanthropic partnerships
  • We can expand support for developers building Open Source tools focused on education, accessibility, and security
  • We can deepen our work with volunteers, contributors, and supported project teams

This status is not only a legal category. It is a foundation that allows us to increase our impact and grow our mission.

Why This Matters for Open Source

Open Source has the power to reach communities that commercial software often overlooks. Developers face real barriers such as:

  • Limited funding
  • Lack of mentorship
  • Low visibility
  • Difficulty sustaining long-term projects

As a public charity, Software for Progress Foundation can address these challenges. We can offer support and resources that help impactful Open Source projects grow, gain users, and make a meaningful difference in the world.

With this new status, we are committed to doing even more for the developers who make this work possible.

What Comes Next

Now that our charitable status is official, Software for Progress Foundation is moving forward on several major initiatives:

  • Opening our first funding and grant pathways
  • Reaching out to developers who want to build projects with us
  • Responding to volunteer applications and welcoming new contributors
  • Updating our website and supported project listings
  • Building a clear structure for mentorship and project support

This is the moment we shift from preparation to full operation.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who believed in this mission from the beginning. Your encouragement helped us reach this milestone, and your support will help shape the future of Open Source software that benefits everyone.

Software for Progress Foundation is only getting started, and we are excited to continue building this future with you.
